A double portrait by Frida Kahlo, painted in 1931, depicts the artist alongside her husband, Diego Rivera, in traditional Mexican attire. This work is part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
This double portrait by Frida Kahlo, painted in 1931, depicts the artist alongside her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera. Kahlo and Rivera stand side by side, holding hands, in front of a neutral background. Rivera is shown in a dark suit, holding a palette and brushes, symbols of his profession. Kahlo wears a traditional Mexican dress, a green skirt and red shawl, and jewellery. A banner held by a dove floats above them, bearing an inscription. The painting commemorates their marriage and reflects Kahlo's exploration of identity, Mexican culture, and personal relationships. The composition is relatively straightforward, with the figures rendered in a somewhat naive style. Kahlo's self-portraits often incorporate symbolic elements and references to her personal experiences, and this work is no exception. The painting is now part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, a gift from Albert M. Bender.
