A delicate watercolour and gouache study by Eugène Delacroix, depicting King Francis I of France in a quiet, intimate moment with Anne de Pisseleu.
This work by Eugène Delacroix depicts King Francis I of France in a moment of private repose with his mistress, Anne de Pisseleu, the Duchess of Étampes. Delacroix, a central figure in the French Romantic movement, often turned to the Renaissance for subject matter, finding in the lives of monarchs and their courts a theatre for human emotion and period costume. The composition focuses on the intimacy between the two figures, with the King seated while the Duchess stands behind him, her hand resting gently on his shoulder.
The artist employs a delicate application of watercolour and gouache, allowing for a fluidity that captures the texture of the period garments. The King is dressed in the elaborate fashion of the sixteenth century, complete with a doublet and hose, while the Duchess wears a flowing gown of deep green. To the right, a lute rests against the furniture, a common motif in historical genre scenes that suggests leisure and courtly refinement. The background remains somewhat indistinct, directing the viewer's attention to the interaction between the figures.
Delacroix was known for his interest in the psychological dimensions of his subjects. Here, he avoids the rigid formality often associated with royal portraiture, opting instead for a scene that feels domestic and personal. The palette is balanced, with the cool tones of the King's attire contrasting against the warmer, earthy hues of the interior setting. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to render historical narratives with a sense of immediacy and personal connection, moving away from the strict neoclassicism that dominated the French Academy during his early career. The work remains a fine example of the Romantic fascination with the past, interpreted through a lens of individual character and private interaction.
