A detailed engraving by William Blake from his series illustrating Edward Young's poem, Night Thoughts, featuring figures in a contemplative outdoor setting.
This engraving is one of the many illustrations William Blake produced for Edward Young's poem, Night Thoughts. Blake was commissioned to provide designs for a new edition of the work, which resulted in a series of large-scale watercolour drawings. These were subsequently engraved by Blake himself, though only a portion of the planned volumes were published. The image depicts a scene of quiet contemplation, featuring a figure crouching beside a reclining companion, accompanied by a horse. The composition is framed by the heavy, organic forms of a tree, which creates a sense of enclosure around the figures.
Blake's approach to the text is characteristic of his visionary style. He does not merely decorate the page: he interprets the philosophical and moral weight of Young's verses through his own symbolic lens. The line work is precise, typical of the copperplate engraving techniques of the late eighteenth century. The figures possess a fluid, elongated quality that is a hallmark of Blake's draughtsmanship. The background, featuring a distant landscape and a secondary figure, adds a sense of scale and atmosphere to the scene. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative relationship between poetry and visual art during the Romantic period, where the printed page became a site for complex narrative exploration. The integration of text and image remains a defining feature of Blake's output, reflecting his belief in the unity of the arts. This specific plate captures the melancholic and reflective tone of Young's writing, translated into the visual language of the period.
