Painted in 1915, Emil Nolde's 'Figure with Flowers' is a striking example of German Expressionism, featuring a silhouetted figure amidst loosely rendered floral arrangements. The painting's stark composition and limited palette convey a sense of immediacy and emotional intensity.
Emil Nolde (1867-1956) was a German-Danish Expressionist painter and printmaker. He was known for his intense use of colour and his emotionally charged depictions of figures and flowers. Nolde was initially associated with the group Die Brücke (The Bridge), but he later developed his own distinctive style. His work often explored themes of nature, religion, and the human condition. 'Figure with Flowers', created in 1915, exemplifies Nolde's Expressionist style. The painting features a stark, silhouetted figure standing amidst two vases of flowers. The figure's simplified form and dark colour contrast with the surrounding floral arrangements. The flowers themselves are rendered with loose brushstrokes and a limited palette, conveying a sense of immediacy and emotional intensity. The background is a wash of muted tones, further emphasising the figure and the flowers as the central subjects. The composition is direct and unadorned, focusing on the raw emotion and psychological impact of the image.
