A detailed lithograph depicting a North Holland family in a traditional Zaandam interior, capturing the quiet domesticity of the early nineteenth century.
This lithograph by Jean Baptiste Ambroise Marcellin Jobard depicts a domestic interior in Zaandam, North Holland. The composition centres on a family group gathered around a simple wooden table. A man, wearing a traditional hat, sits on the right reading a document, while two women occupy the opposite side, engaged in needlework. The room is sparsely furnished, featuring a mantlepiece adorned with a row of plates, a wall-mounted clock, and a single window allowing light to enter the space. A small dog rests beneath the table, adding a sense of quietude to the scene.
Jobard, a Belgian lithographer and inventor, produced this work during a period when ethnographic and regional genre scenes were popular in European print culture. The print captures the specific dress and customs of the North Holland region, documenting the daily life of the local population. The technical execution of the lithograph relies on subtle tonal gradations to define the forms and the soft light filtering into the room. The inclusion of the title 'Famille Nordhollandaise à Sardam' at the base identifies the subjects and location, reflecting the era's interest in regional identity and social observation. The work is part of a broader series documenting domestic life, often categorised under the theme of 'Huiselyk Leven' or domestic existence. The print provides a clear view of early nineteenth-century Dutch interior design, from the arrangement of the hearth to the modest furniture choices of the period.
