Description

A detailed etching by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting the biblical expulsion of the money-changers within a grand, gothic architectural setting.

This etching by Albrecht Altdorfer depicts the biblical narrative of Christ driving the money-changers from the temple. Altdorfer, a key figure of the Danube School, demonstrates his mastery of the etching medium through the use of fine, controlled lines to define both the architectural setting and the figures. The scene is set within a cavernous, gothic interior, where the soaring arches and rhythmic columns create a sense of depth and scale. Christ occupies the foreground, his posture dynamic as he wields a scourge, while the money-changers are shown in various states of retreat or submission on the floor.

The architectural elements reflect the artist's interest in spatial construction, a common trait in his work. The light source appears to emanate from Christ himself, casting subtle shadows that model the forms of the figures and the stone floor. The background reveals a glimpse of an exterior structure through an arched opening, adding a layer of complexity to the composition. Altdorfer avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the tension of the narrative and the structural integrity of the temple interior. The print captures the dramatic intensity of the moment through the interplay of light and shadow, characteristic of early sixteenth-century German printmaking.

As a practitioner of the Danube School, Altdorfer often integrated human figures into environments that felt expansive or atmospheric. This work is an example of his ability to balance narrative clarity with a sophisticated approach to perspective. The etching technique allows for a level of detail that brings the texture of the stone and the folds of the garments to life. This piece is a representative example of the period's focus on biblical themes rendered with technical precision and a distinct stylistic approach to spatial depth.

Artist Biography

Albrecht Altdorfer

Altdorfer was elected mayor of Regensburg in 1528 but turned the position down to finish a painting. The painting was The Battle of Alexander at Issus, commissioned by Duke William IV of Bavaria: a vast panoramic canvas showing Alexander's victory over Darius III, with thousands of tiny soldiers beneath a cosmic sky. It is one of the first history paintings to treat landscape as the dominant element.

He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
