A striking monotype by Paul Gauguin, featuring a simplified, symbolic depiction of Eve rendered in bold, monochromatic ink.
This monotype by Paul Gauguin presents a stark, monochromatic exploration of the figure of Eve. Executed during his time in Tahiti, the work reflects the artist's departure from traditional European academic standards. Gauguin utilised the monotype process to achieve a textured, almost primitive quality, where the ink sits heavily upon the paper, creating deep contrasts between the dark, silhouetted forms and the pale, unworked background.
The central figure stands in a contemplative pose, her hand raised to her face. To her left, a large, indistinct shape suggests a creature or a symbolic element, while a smaller, profile head appears to the right. These figures are rendered with simplified, bold lines that prioritise expressive weight over anatomical precision. The composition is deliberately flat, rejecting the illusion of three-dimensional space in favour of a decorative, symbolic arrangement.
Gauguin often returned to the theme of Eve, viewing her as a symbol of innocence and the primal state of humanity. In this print, the lack of detail and the rough application of ink contribute to a sense of mystery. The work is not a literal depiction but rather a meditation on myth and origin. The presence of the number 9, enclosed in an oval at the top left, adds an enigmatic layer to the piece, typical of Gauguin's interest in incorporating personal or cryptic signs into his visual language. This print offers a glimpse into the experimental techniques Gauguin employed to push the boundaries of printmaking, moving away from the refined aesthetics of his contemporaries toward a more raw, direct form of visual communication.
