A 1916 urban scene by Maximilien Luce, capturing the daily movement of pedestrians on the stone stairs of the rue de l'Alsace in Paris.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1916. The painting captures a specific urban moment in Paris, focusing on the steep stone steps of the rue de l'Alsace. Luce, known for his interest in the working-class districts of the city, depicts a scene of daily movement. Figures are scattered across the composition, some ascending the stairs while others gather at the base. The artist employs a palette of muted tones, punctuated by specific splashes of colour in the clothing of the pedestrians, such as the bright red coat of a child in the foreground.
The architectural elements are rendered with a focus on the play of light against the stone surfaces. The perspective draws the eye upward toward the top of the staircase, where the silhouette of the city infrastructure looms against a bright, cloudy sky. Unlike his earlier pointillist works, this piece displays a more fluid, painterly application of pigment. The brushwork remains visible, contributing to the sense of atmosphere and the bustle of the street. Luce avoids idealising the scene, choosing instead to document the mundane reality of Parisian life during the early twentieth century. The composition balances the solid, static nature of the stone stairs with the transient, shifting presence of the crowd. This work provides a glimpse into the urban environment that occupied much of the artist's attention during his later career, reflecting his ongoing observation of the city and its inhabitants.
