A 1865 woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a Western couple in Yokohama, blending traditional Japanese motifs with the era's cultural shifts.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a specific category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints documented the arrival of Westerners, their customs, and their technology, which were subjects of immense curiosity to the Japanese public during the Bakumatsu period.
The composition depicts a Western couple, identified by the cartouche as English, observing the surroundings near Yoshida Bridge. The man stands on foot, wearing a Western-style hat and coat, while the woman is mounted on a horse. In the background, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rises above the horizon, providing a traditional Japanese anchor to the scene. The title references the classic theme of descending geese, a motif derived from the Eight Views of Omi, adapted here to the local geography of Yokohama.
Yoshitora employs a distinct graphic style, utilising bold outlines and a palette of flat, saturated colours typical of the mid-nineteenth-century woodblock tradition. The figures are rendered with a degree of stylisation that reflects the Japanese interpretation of foreign dress and features. The print serves as a historical record of the cultural exchange occurring at the time, capturing the intersection of traditional Japanese artistic conventions and the influx of international influence. The inclusion of the cartouche and the series title, Eight Views of Yokohama in Musashino Province, situates the work within a broader effort to categorise and interpret the changing social environment of the era. The print is a clear example of how artists of the Utagawa school engaged with the rapid modernisation of Japan, translating novel experiences into the familiar format of the colour woodblock print.
