A Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting English and Russian couples, capturing the fascination with Western visitors in 19th-century Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the appearance and customs of foreign visitors. This work depicts two pairs of Europeans, identified by the artist as English and Russian, in a style that blends traditional Japanese printmaking techniques with the curiosity of the era regarding Western life.
The composition is divided into two distinct scenes. On the left, a man sits on a chair while a woman plays a small horn, accompanied by an accordion. On the right, a standing man gestures toward a woman in a long skirt. The figures are rendered with the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines of the Utagawa school. The colour palette is restrained, relying on blocks of blue, yellow, and soft pink against a neutral background. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy surrounding the figures provides context, labelling the subjects and their origins for a contemporary Japanese audience.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became known for his prolific output of prints depicting foreign subjects. These works were not intended as realistic portraits, but rather as visual records of the exotic visitors arriving in Yokohama. The print captures the fascination with Western fashion, such as the hats and structured garments worn by the figures, which were novel sights in Japan at the time. The work remains a historical document of the cultural exchange that defined the transition into the Meiji era, reflecting the Japanese public's attempt to categorise and understand the influx of international travellers through the medium of the woodblock print.
