A traditional Japanese votive painting on wood depicting the legendary Empress Jingū and her minister, Takenochi no Sukune, with the infant Emperor Ōjin.
This votive painting, or ema, depicts a scene from Japanese mythology involving Empress Jingū and her minister, Takenochi no Sukune. The composition focuses on the figures as they attend to the infant who would become Emperor Ōjin. Ema are traditionally offered at Shinto shrines as a form of prayer or thanksgiving. This example is painted directly onto a wooden board, a common practice for such offerings.
The figures are rendered in a style consistent with traditional Japanese narrative painting. Empress Jingū is shown in formal attire, while Takenochi no Sukune is depicted in a protective posture. The artist, Nagano Yasunosuke, uses a palette of muted earth tones, red, and green to define the figures against the natural grain of the wood. The lines are clear, outlining the garments and facial features with precision. The background includes subtle indications of a natural setting, such as a pine tree, which serves to frame the central figures.
The construction of the piece involves multiple vertical wooden planks joined together, a standard format for larger votive tablets. The surface shows signs of age, with the pigments having settled into the wood grain over time. This piece provides insight into the visual culture of shrine offerings and the popularisation of historical and legendary figures in Japanese folk art. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the narrative. It serves as a record of the religious and cultural practices associated with Shinto shrines, where such items were displayed for public viewing. The preservation of the original wooden frame further adds to the historical character of the object, maintaining its original presentation as a dedicated votive item.
