The Courtesan Hitomachi of the Tsutaya Brothel - Isoda Koryūsai

A refined depiction of the courtesan Hitomachi and her attendants by the Japanese artist Isoda Koryūsai, rendered in ink and colour on silk.

This work by Isoda Koryūsai depicts the courtesan Hitomachi, accompanied by two young attendants, known as kamuro. The composition belongs to the series Hinagata wakana no hatsu moyō, which translates to A Pattern Book of the Year’s First Designs, Fresh as Spring Herbs. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to a career as a printmaker and painter, is recognised for his refined depictions of women in the Yoshiwara pleasure district.

The figures are positioned against a neutral background, with a pine tree providing a vertical element to the left. The courtesan wears a layered kimono featuring floral motifs, while her attendants mirror her style in smaller scale. The use of ink and colour on silk allows for subtle gradations in the fabric folds and facial expressions. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the contours of the figures and the texture of the pine needles. The overall arrangement is balanced, focusing on the social hierarchy and the fashion of the period.

Koryūsai was active during the mid-to-late eighteenth century, a period when the ukiyo-e genre reached a high level of technical sophistication. His work often appeared in both print and painting formats, with this particular piece demonstrating his skill in brushwork on silk. The inclusion of the kamuro provides a narrative element, suggesting a scene of daily life within the brothel. The muted palette, dominated by soft blues, pinks, and earth tones, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the era.
