A striking drypoint portrait by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, featuring a delicate, elongated subject with hand-applied golden tones.
This portrait of Dr. Bauer is a characteristic example of the graphic work produced by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner during his time in Davos. Kirchner, a founding member of the Die Brücke group, moved away from the urban intensity of his earlier Berlin years towards a more introspective and psychological approach to portraiture. The work demonstrates his mastery of the drypoint technique, where lines are scratched directly into the metal plate to create a raw, immediate quality.
The composition is dominated by a singular, elongated head. Kirchner employs a nervous, scratchy line quality that captures the subject with a sense of fragility and psychological tension. The facial features are rendered with minimal strokes, yet they convey a specific, weary character. A notable feature of this print is the application of hand-colouring, which adds a golden, luminous quality to the silhouette of the head. This choice creates a contrast against the darker, atmospheric background, which retains the plate tone and marks of the printing process.
Kirchner often used his prints to explore the inner state of his subjects rather than their physical likeness. The background includes faint, gestural outlines of other figures, suggesting a spatial ambiguity common in his work. The print reflects the artist's interest in the expressive potential of the line, prioritising emotional resonance over anatomical precision. By stripping back the details, Kirchner focuses the viewer on the gaze and the posture of the sitter. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's later period, where his style became more refined yet retained the jagged energy that defined his earlier output. It is a study in human presence, captured through the direct and unforgiving medium of the etched plate.
