László Moholy-Nagy, a central figure of the Bauhaus movement, experimented extensively with the camera-less photographic process known as the photogram. This work, titled Double Portrait, demonstrates his interest in the manipulation of light and shadow to create abstract forms. By placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light, the artist bypassed the traditional lens, allowing for a direct recording of light intensity and opacity.

In this composition, two profiles emerge from the darkness. The silhouettes are rendered in stark monochrome, with the light areas suggesting the contours of human faces. The image relies on the interplay between positive and negative space, a technique Moholy-Nagy utilised to explore the boundaries of perception. The soft, ethereal edges of the forms contrast with the deep, solid black background, creating a sense of depth despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
