A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting an English couple near Yoshida Bridge against the backdrop of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that documented the arrival of foreigners in Japan following the opening of the port of Yokohama in 1859. The work depicts an English couple, a subject that fascinated Japanese artists during the Bakumatsu period. The man stands on the ground, wearing a Western-style hat and coat, while the woman sits atop a horse. Their attire, particularly the woman's voluminous skirt and the man's tailored jacket, provided a visual curiosity for the contemporary Japanese audience.
The composition incorporates traditional Japanese elements alongside these foreign subjects. In the background, Mount Fuji rises above a rural scene, creating a juxtaposition between the iconic Japanese landscape and the presence of Western visitors. The title, referencing the classic theme of descending geese, connects this modern scene to the traditional Eight Views of Omi, a common trope in Japanese art history. The print uses the bold outlines and flat colour application characteristic of the Utagawa school.
Yoshitora was a prolific designer of these prints, often focusing on the details of foreign fashion and technology. The inclusion of the horse and the specific bridge location serves to ground the exotic subjects within the geography of the Kanagawa prefecture. The print functions as a record of the cultural exchange occurring at the time, capturing the curiosity and observation directed toward the new arrivals. The colour palette remains balanced, with the deep blue of the sky and the red of the woman's skirt providing visual structure to the scene. This piece offers a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese perspective on Westerners, presented through the established visual language of the woodblock print tradition.
