Instead, Rethel presents a quiet, almost peaceful transition.

The scene takes place in a bell tower. An elderly man sits in a high-backed chair, his head tilted back in a final rest. Beside him, a figure of Death, dressed in the robes of a monk, pulls the bell rope to announce the man's passing. The composition uses the architecture of the tower to frame the figures, with the open archway revealing a distant, sunlit horizon. This contrast between the shadowed interior and the light outside suggests a release from earthly burdens.

Rethel employs precise, controlled lines to define the textures of the stone walls, the wooden beams, and the folds of the monk's habit.
