A monumental abstract work from 1907, exploring the stages of human life through fluid, symbolic circular forms and a soft, evocative colour palette.
De tio största, n° 2 Barnaaldern, or The Ten Largest, No. 2, Childhood, is a monumental work by the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. Created in 1907, this piece belongs to a series of ten large-scale paintings that explore the stages of human life. Af Klint, who was a trained landscape and portrait painter, turned toward spiritualism and theosophy to inform her artistic practice. This shift resulted in a body of work that predates the widely recognised emergence of abstract art in the early twentieth century. The composition is dominated by large, circular forms and organic shapes that suggest biological or cosmic development. The palette consists of soft lilacs, ochres, and deep blues, which create a sense of ethereal movement across the surface. The artist employs a visual language of symbols, where circles and floral-like motifs represent growth, unity, and the cyclical nature of existence. Unlike the geometric abstraction that would later define the movement, af Klint's work retains a fluid, hand-drawn quality that reflects her interest in the unseen forces of nature and the human spirit. In this specific work, the forms appear to float within a blue field, suggesting a state of becoming. The repetition of circular motifs provides a rhythmic structure, guiding the viewer through the various stages of childhood as interpreted by the artist. The scale of the original work is significant, intended to envelop the viewer in a meditative experience. By combining traditional tempera techniques with unconventional, non-representational forms, af Klint created a unique visual vocabulary. Her work remained largely private during her lifetime, as she believed the world was not yet ready for her esoteric vision. Today, these paintings offer a window into a singular artistic mind that sought to map the spiritual dimensions of reality through colour and form.
