A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting a Dutch goldsmith at work, taken from the Menselyk Bedryf series.
This etching, titled De Goudsmit, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf, a collection documenting various trades and professions in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century. Cornelis van der Sys captures the interior of a goldsmith's workshop with precise attention to the tools and environment of the craft. The central figure sits at a workbench, focused on a small object, while an assistant stands nearby, observing the process. The composition utilises light from a window to define the workspace, creating a clear distinction between the artisan and the surrounding tools of the trade, such as the anvil and bellows.
The print includes Dutch text above and below the image, which provides moral commentary on the nature of material wealth and the pursuit of spiritual goals. This combination of visual documentation and didactic verse was common in Dutch print culture, where the depiction of daily labour often carried deeper allegorical meanings. The line work is fine and controlled, typical of the etching techniques employed by Dutch masters of the period to convey texture and depth within a small format. The artist provides a glimpse into the technical reality of the goldsmith, showing the specific equipment required for metalwork, including the furnace area and the various implements scattered across the bench. By documenting these specific trades, Van der Sys preserves a record of the economic life of the Dutch Republic, reflecting the value placed on craftsmanship and industry. The print is a clear example of how eighteenth-century artists balanced observational detail with the cultural expectations of their audience, providing both a practical view of a workshop and a reflection on the vanity of earthly possessions.
