Gustav Klimt's "Danaë" (1907-1908) depicts the mythological figure in a state of sensual abandon, rendered in Klimt's signature decorative style with symbolic motifs and a luminous palette.
Gustav Klimt's "Danaë", painted between 1907 and 1908, presents a sensuous interpretation of the Greek mythological figure. In the myth, Danaë was imprisoned by her father, King Acrisius, who sought to prevent a prophecy that he would be killed by her son. Zeus, in the form of golden rain, impregnated her, resulting in the birth of Perseus. Klimt captures Danaë in a state of ecstasy, her body rendered in soft yellow tones, curled in repose. The painting is characterised by its decorative elements and symbolic motifs. Swirls and geometric shapes adorn the background, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. The figure's red hair and the small blue flower near her hand add touches of colour to the composition. The dark, almost abstract background, punctuated with small, stylised plant forms and birds, contrasts with the luminous figure of Danaë, drawing the viewer's attention to her form and expression. Klimt's use of colour and pattern transforms the classical myth into a symbolist vision of desire and transformation.
