Koloman Moser (1868-1918) was an Austrian artist associated with the Vienna Secession movement. As a painter, graphic artist, and designer, he contributed significantly to the development of Viennese art at the turn of the century. His work spans a range of media, from painting and printmaking to decorative arts and design. He co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) in 1903, which aimed to unite art and craft in the creation of functional objects. Moser's "Mermaid" is an oil painting depicting a nude female figure reclining in a natural setting. The figure is rendered in warm, golden tones, contrasting with the cooler greens and browns of the surrounding environment. The composition is intimate, with the mermaid filling much of the canvas.
