A refined woodblock print featuring a crow perched on a cherry blossom branch against a full moon, created in the Japanese kacho-ga style.
This woodblock print by Matsuki Heikichi captures a quiet moment of observation within the Japanese kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition centres on a solitary crow perched upon a gnarled cherry blossom branch. The bird is rendered with deep, dark ink tones, providing a stark contrast to the pale, ethereal blossoms that surround it. Behind the branch, a large, circular moon dominates the lower portion of the frame, casting a soft, diffused light across the scene.
Matsuki Heikichi was a publisher and artist active during the transition into the twentieth century, a period when the shin-hanga movement sought to revitalise traditional woodblock techniques. This work demonstrates the technical precision associated with the era, particularly in the subtle gradation of the background colour, known as bokashi. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the silhouette of the crow to function as the primary visual anchor. The cherry blossoms are depicted with delicate outlines, suggesting the fragility of the petals against the sturdy, textured bark of the branch.
The print reflects a specific aesthetic sensibility common in Japanese art, where the juxtaposition of the mundane, such as a crow, with the seasonal beauty of cherry blossoms creates a sense of temporal stillness. The composition avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a balanced arrangement that draws the eye across the curve of the branch. The inclusion of the artist's seal in the lower right corner confirms the provenance of the piece within the context of early twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. This print offers a clear example of how traditional themes were adapted for a new audience, maintaining a focus on natural observation while utilising the refined printing methods of the time.
