Ohara Koson
A serene woodblock print by Ohara Koson featuring a cherry blossom branch silhouetted against a full moon in shades of blue.
This woodblock print by Ohara Koson captures a cherry tree branch silhouetted against a full moon. Koson, a master of the kacho-ga genre, focuses on the interplay between the organic forms of the blossoms and the stark, circular geometry of the moon. The composition relies on a restricted colour palette, dominated by shades of blue, which evokes the stillness of a night scene. Unlike traditional ukiyo-e, which often utilised bold outlines and flat colour fields, this work incorporates subtle gradations of tone. These effects are achieved through the technical precision of the woodblock carving and printing process. The cherry blossoms are rendered with attention to their delicate structure, while the trunk of the tree provides a vertical anchor for the composition. The negative space surrounding the branch and the moon creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the quiet atmosphere of the scene. Koson was a significant figure in the shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese printmaking by incorporating Western influences such as atmospheric perspective and light effects. This print demonstrates his ability to balance natural observation with a stylised, decorative aesthetic. The work is devoid of human figures, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the natural subject matter. The print is a characteristic example of his output, which often featured birds and flowers in various seasonal settings. By choosing a monochromatic blue scheme, Koson emphasises the mood of the night, transforming a common botanical subject into a study of light and shadow. The artist's seal is visible in the lower right corner, confirming the authenticity of the design within his extensive body of work.
