A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, this work depicts a crayfish and two shrimps with careful attention to detail. The light blue background suggests water, while Japanese text and seals add to the print's historical context.
This print of a crayfish and two shrimps is by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Hokusai was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He is best known as the author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. This print depicts a large crayfish dominating the composition, its long antennae reaching towards the top of the image. Two smaller shrimps are positioned to the right, near the lower corner. The creatures are rendered with careful attention to detail, showcasing their textures and forms. The background features light blue shading, suggesting water. Japanese text and seals are present in the upper and lower corners, adding to the print's aesthetic and historical context. Ukiyo-e, meaning 'pictures of the floating world', is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel views and, like this example, flora and fauna.
