A refined 1776 woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunsho depicting a group of courtesans from the Kadotsutaya establishment.
This woodblock print originates from the first volume of the publication Mirror of Beautiful Women of the Pleasure Quarters (Seiro bijin awase sugata kagami), issued in 1776. Katsukawa Shunsho, a master of the Katsukawa school, produced this work during a period when the depiction of bijin-ga, or beautiful women, reached a high level of technical and aesthetic refinement. The composition features a group of courtesans associated with the Kadotsutaya establishment, arranged in a manner that balances individual characterisation with the collective elegance expected of the genre.
Shunsho is recognised for his departure from the stylised, elongated figures favoured by his contemporaries. Instead, he opted for a more naturalistic approach, capturing subtle variations in facial expression and posture. The women are dressed in elaborate kimonos, each decorated with distinct patterns that demonstrate the artist's attention to textile design. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the garments and the delicate coiffures of the subjects. A vertical cartouche on the right side provides the title of the series, integrating text into the visual field in a manner typical of Edo-period book illustration.
The print reflects the cultural climate of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters, where the lives of high-ranking courtesans were documented with fascination. Shunsho avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction and poise of the figures. The muted colour palette, characteristic of early multi-colour woodblock printing, relies on soft tones that have aged with the paper. This work provides a window into the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, documenting both the fashion of the era and the artistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
