A delicate woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, capturing a quiet moment of a woman adjusting a lamp in an interior setting.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This print depicts a woman in a domestic setting, engaged in the quiet task of adjusting a lamp. Her posture is slender and elongated, a characteristic feature of Harunobu's figures during this period. The composition relies on a delicate balance of negative space and architectural elements, such as the folding screen and the tatami mat floor.
The colour palette is restrained, utilising soft tones that have aged with the paper. The figure wears a simple, flowing robe, which contrasts with the patterned screen behind her. The lamp itself acts as a central element, drawing the viewer's eye to the interaction between the woman and the light source. Harunobu often focused on the daily lives of women in the Yoshiwara district, capturing moments of solitude or preparation. This work avoids the theatricality found in earlier ukiyo-e prints, opting instead for a lyrical, intimate quality.
The printing process involved several blocks, each carved to apply a specific colour. This technique enabled the subtle gradations and precise registration seen in the robes and the background. The lines are fine and controlled, defining the form of the figure without the need for heavy outlines. By focusing on the mundane actions of his subjects, Harunobu elevated these scenes to a form of visual poetry. The print remains a clear example of the technical and aesthetic shifts that defined the mid-Edo period, moving away from the bold, graphic styles of his predecessors toward a more refined and atmospheric approach to printmaking.
