This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by two young attendants, a classic subject within the bijin-ga genre of Ukiyo-e art. Miyagawa Shunsui, a student of the founder of the Miyagawa school, Miyagawa Choshun, demonstrates the characteristic focus on the elegance of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The central figure wears an elaborate kimono with a bold red ground, decorated with patterns that suggest the status and fashion of the mid-Edo period. Her posture is graceful, reflecting the stylised aesthetic common to the period's depictions of women.

The two attendants, or kamuro, follow closely behind, their smaller stature and simpler, darker garments providing a visual contrast to the primary figure. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged against a neutral background that allows the colour of their clothing to dominate. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the facial features and the folds of the heavy silk garments. The mounting of the scroll itself features a geometric checkerboard pattern at the base, which adds a decorative element to the overall presentation.

Shunsui is known for his work in the Miyagawa style, which often eschewed the mass-produced nature of woodblock prints in favour of hand-painted scrolls. This piece captures the refined atmosphere of the floating world, focusing on the poise and sartorial detail of its subjects. The work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of 18th-century Japan, where the lives of courtesans were documented with precision and care.
