A classic example of Neoplasticism, this work by Piet Mondrian uses a grid of black lines and primary colours to achieve a balanced, abstract composition.
Piet Mondrian, a central figure in the development of abstract art, produced this work during his mature period in Paris. It represents the culmination of his search for a universal visual language, which he termed Neoplasticism. By reducing his palette to the three primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) alongside black, white, and grey, Mondrian sought to strip away the subjective elements of traditional painting. The composition relies on a grid of black lines that define rectangular areas of varying sizes. These lines do not merely frame the colours: they act as structural elements that balance the visual weight of the canvas. The large white area dominates the right side, creating a sense of equilibrium against the smaller, coloured rectangles on the left. This arrangement avoids symmetry, opting instead for a dynamic balance that shifts the viewer's focus across the entire surface. Mondrian believed that this rigorous approach to form and colour could express a higher order of reality. He rejected the representation of three-dimensional space, preferring the flat surface of the canvas to remain true to its nature. The precision of the lines and the flat application of paint reflect his desire for clarity and objectivity. This work is a clear example of his method, where every element is calculated to achieve a state of harmony. The absence of representational subject matter allows the viewer to engage directly with the relationships between line, colour, and space. It is a study in reduction, where the artist removes all non-essential components to reveal the underlying structure of the visual world.
