A portrait of the poet Minamoto no Hitoshi from the Jidai fudō uta awase, rendered in the nise-e style by Fujiwara no Nobuzane.
This work belongs to the Jidai fudō uta awase, or Competition Between Poets of Different Eras, a series of handscrolls featuring portraits of celebrated Japanese poets. The image depicts Minamoto no Hitoshi, a Heian period poet, rendered in the nise-e style. This term translates to likeness picture, a genre of portraiture that prioritised the capture of an individual's distinct physical features and personality over idealised representation.
Fujiwara no Nobuzane was a master of this style. His approach relies on thin, precise ink lines to define the subject's posture and facial structure. The figure of Hitoshi is shown in a seated position, wearing traditional court attire. The composition is sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the economy of the brushwork. Above the figure, the calligraphy provides the context of the poetic competition, linking the visual portrait to the literary tradition of the era. The paper shows signs of age, including horizontal creases and a warm, aged tone that complements the monochrome ink application.
Nobuzane's work is notable for its observational quality. By moving away from the highly stylised conventions of earlier court painting, he created portraits that feel grounded in reality. The lines are fluid yet controlled, demonstrating the technical skill required to convey character through minimal detail. This print captures the essence of the original scroll, preserving the balance between the written word and the visual form. It offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Kamakura period, where the appreciation of individual identity and poetic skill remained central to the cultural life of the aristocracy.
