Description

A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi featuring the courtesan Takigawa, capturing the grace and fashion of the Edo period pleasure quarters.

This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts the high-ranking courtesan Takigawa of the Ōgiya brothel. It belongs to the series A Comparison of Selected Beauties of the Pleasure Quarters, a collection that documented the most celebrated women of the Yoshiwara district during the late eighteenth century. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre, often favouring elongated figures and a sense of aristocratic grace that departed from the more robust portrayals of his contemporaries.

The composition focuses on the figure of Takigawa, who is shown adjusting her hair ornaments. Her posture is elegant, with the sweeping lines of her kimono creating a sense of movement against the neutral background. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the period, with delicate line work defining the folds of her garments and the subtle patterns of the fabric. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks, muted purples, and earthy tones to convey a sense of sophistication.

In this work, Eishi captures the specific atmosphere of the New Year appointment, a period of high social activity within the pleasure quarters. The inclusion of the cartouche in the upper right corner provides the necessary context for the series, identifying the subject and the specific occasion. The print reflects the cultural preoccupation with the fashion and status of courtesans, who functioned as trendsetters in Edo society. By focusing on the individual identity of the subject, Eishi provides a glimpse into the social hierarchy of the pleasure quarters, where the most successful women were treated with a level of reverence typically reserved for nobility. This print remains a representative example of Eishi's contribution to the bijin-ga tradition, where the portrayal of feminine beauty was elevated through careful composition and technical mastery.
