A 1861 woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a fantastical, imagined street scene in Washington, DC, during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, produced in 1861, belongs to the genre of Yokohama-e. These prints emerged during the late Edo period, following the opening of Japanese ports to foreign trade. Artists of this era sought to document the unfamiliar customs, dress, and architecture of Western nations, often relying on imported illustrations or imagination rather than direct observation.
In this triptych, Yoshitora depicts a bustling street scene in Washington. The composition features Western figures dressed in mid-nineteenth-century attire, including voluminous crinoline skirts and top hats. The architecture blends European-style towers and multi-storey buildings with a distinctly Japanese sense of spatial arrangement. A hot air balloon floats in the upper right, reflecting the fascination with Western technological advancements that permeated Japanese society at the time. The print is divided into three panels, a common format for large-scale narrative works in the Ukiyo-e tradition.
The colour palette relies on the characteristic pigments of the period, with soft blues, muted ochres, and earthy tones defining the figures and structures. The line work is precise, maintaining the clarity required for woodblock carving. While the depiction of Washington is largely fantastical, the print offers a view into how Japanese artists interpreted the rapid modernisation and global expansion of the West during the mid-nineteenth century. It remains a curious document of cross-cultural exchange, capturing a moment when the world appeared to be shrinking through the lens of international trade and curiosity.
