A delicate Bunjinga-style fan painting by Tsubaki Kakoku, featuring chrysanthemums rendered in ink and soft colour.
This work by Tsubaki Kakoku presents a delicate study of chrysanthemums, rendered in the traditional format of a folding fan. Kakoku was a practitioner of the Bunjinga style, or literati painting, which drew inspiration from Chinese ink wash traditions. The composition balances the organic, flowing forms of the floral subjects with the rigid, vertical structure of the fan ribs and the calligraphic inscriptions on the left side.
The chrysanthemums are depicted with a focus on natural observation, utilising soft washes of colour to define the petals and leaves. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the negative space of the paper to function as an active element of the design. The ink work shows the characteristic fluidity of the brush, with varying pressure creating depth within the foliage. The inclusion of calligraphy serves to integrate the visual art with the literary tradition, a common practice among Bunjinga painters who sought to express personal cultivation through their work.
As a functional object, the fan provides a unique canvas that dictates the arrangement of the subject matter. The flowers appear to grow from the lower right, arching across the surface toward the upper centre, creating a sense of movement that complements the physical shape of the fan. The gold-leafed edges provide a subtle frame, adding a touch of refinement to the composition. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the late Edo period, where the appreciation of seasonal flora and the mastery of brushwork were central to the artistic identity of the literati class. The work remains a fine example of how traditional painting techniques were adapted for decorative, everyday objects without sacrificing artistic integrity or technical precision.
