Description
A dramatic woodcut by Albrecht Altdorfer, 'Christ before Pilate' depicts the biblical scene of Jesus's trial before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate.
Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver and architect of the Renaissance. He is known particularly for his innovations in pure subject, and is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School. His work often combined religious and historical themes with expressive colouring and an interest in the natural world. 'Christ before Pilate' depicts the biblical scene where Jesus is presented to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, for judgement. The composition is dense, with a crowd of figures surrounding Christ. Pilate is seated under a canopy, while Christ stands before him, surrounded by soldiers and onlookers. The artist's use of line creates a sense of depth and movement, drawing the viewer into the scene. The architectural setting, with its arches and columns, adds to the drama of the moment. The woodcut medium lends itself to the stark contrast between light and shadow, enhancing the emotional intensity of the subject.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
