A detailed etching by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Man of Sorrows, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and anatomical form.
This print depicts the Man of Sorrows, a subject common in Northern Renaissance iconography. Christ sits upon a cold stone, his body marked by the physical toll of the Passion. He wears the crown of thorns, and a reed is placed in his hand as a mock sceptre. A tormentor crouches before him, gesturing upwards, adding a narrative element of mockery to the scene. The setting is sparse, featuring a stone archway that frames the figures and provides a sense of enclosure.
Albrecht Dürer was a master of printmaking, and this work demonstrates his technical precision. The use of etching on iron allows for a specific quality of line, which differs from the cleaner cuts of copper engraving. The musculature of Christ is rendered with anatomical accuracy, reflecting the artist's interest in the human form. The shading is achieved through dense hatching and cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth within the figures. The texture of the stone and the rough appearance of the tormentor contrast with the more idealised features of Christ.
This image belongs to a period when Dürer experimented with etching, a medium that allowed for a more fluid, painterly approach to line work compared to the burin-based engraving technique. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the archway complementing the seated posture of Christ. The emotional weight of the scene is conveyed through the slumped posture and the weary expression of the central figure. This print remains a significant example of Dürer's ability to combine theological narrative with rigorous observation of the physical world. The presence of the artist's monogram, the AD, confirms its place within his body of work.
