A 1897 Art Nouveau lithograph by Alphonse Mucha, created as a commercial advertisement for the Compagnie Française des Chocolats et des Thés.
Alphonse Mucha produced this lithographic poster in 1897 for the Compagnie Française des Chocolats et des Thés. It represents the commercial application of the Art Nouveau style, which Mucha helped define through his work in Paris. The composition features a central female figure, often depicted in Mucha's work with flowing hair and decorative garments, serving hot chocolate to two children. The scene captures a domestic moment, using the warmth of the beverage to suggest comfort and familial affection.
The poster employs the characteristic visual language of the period. Mucha uses bold, dark outlines to define the figures, while the background utilises a deep, atmospheric blue that contrasts with the warmer tones of the clothing and the skin. The typography is integrated into the design, curving around the upper arch to frame the subjects. In the lower left corner, the product packaging is clearly displayed, providing a direct link between the artistic composition and the commercial objective of the piece. The inclusion of the phrase 'Donne P'tit' Maman!' adds a narrative element, grounding the advertisement in a relatable, everyday context.
Technically, the work demonstrates Mucha's mastery of the lithographic process. The flat areas of colour are balanced by the subtle shading on the figures, creating a sense of volume without relying on traditional perspective. The decorative elements, such as the swirling steam rising from the cups and the stylised floral motifs in the hair, are typical of the aesthetic movement that sought to unify fine art with functional design. This print remains a representative example of late nineteenth-century graphic design, where the boundaries between commercial promotion and artistic expression were fluid.
