A 19th-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the architectural remains of the House of the Faun in Pompeii.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures the House of the Faun in Pompeii, one of the most expansive and opulent private residences discovered at the site. Sommer, a German photographer who established a studio in Naples, produced a vast catalogue of images documenting the archaeological excavations of the region during the late 19th century. His work provided European audiences with a visual record of classical antiquity, often sold as souvenirs to travellers on the Grand Tour.
The composition focuses on the impluvium, the sunken basin designed to collect rainwater, which sits at the centre of the atrium. Beyond this, the peristyle columns remain visible, framing the space and drawing the eye toward the background where the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius looms. The stark, monochromatic tones of the albumen process emphasise the textures of the ancient stone and the geometric clarity of the Roman architecture. Sommer utilised a large-format camera to achieve this level of detail, ensuring that the shadows and highlights define the structural remnants of the site.
During this period, photography functioned as a primary tool for archaeological documentation. Sommer's prints were widely distributed and collected, contributing to the public understanding of Roman domestic life. The image remains a clear example of the technical precision required for architectural photography in the 1870s, balancing the harsh Mediterranean light with the need to record the spatial depth of the ruins. The print retains its original presentation format, complete with the decorative border and the catalogue number inscribed at the base, reflecting the systematic approach taken by Sommer in his documentation of the Italian peninsula.
