A 1872 albumen print by Adolphe Braun & Cie. featuring a diptych of the Charlemagne statue and a Gothic church interior in Liège.
This albumen print, dated 1872, captures two distinct views of Liège, Belgium, presented as a diptych within a single mount. The left image depicts the equestrian statue of Charlemagne, which stands on the Boulevard d'Avroy. The sculpture, designed by Louis Jehotte, commemorates the historical connection between the city and the Carolingian dynasty. The composition focuses on the monument, showing the bronze figure of the emperor atop a stone plinth, with the surrounding urban architecture visible in the background.
The right image provides a view of a church interior, likely the interior of a local cathedral or collegiate church in Liège. The photograph captures the verticality of the Gothic architecture, with pointed arches and ribbed vaulting drawing the eye toward the altar. The rows of chairs in the foreground provide a sense of scale to the vast, light-filled space. The soft, sepia-toned quality of the albumen process is characteristic of the period, offering a delicate rendering of light and shadow across the stone surfaces.
Adolphe Braun & Cie. operated a prolific studio in Dornach, Alsace, known for high-quality documentation of European architecture and art. Their work often utilised the carbon print process, though albumen prints were common for commercial distribution in the mid-19th century. This specific piece functions as a visual record of civic and religious life in Liège during the 1870s. The handwritten annotations on the mount, including the date and location, suggest this print was part of a larger travel album or a commercial catalogue of European sites. The clarity of the architectural details reflects the technical precision for which the Braun studio was known, providing a clear window into the urban environment of the late 19th century.
