A lithograph by James Tissot from *Vanity Fair*, 1871, depicting Alexander Baillie Cochrane M.P. in a seated pose. The caricature captures Cochrane's likeness with subtle exaggeration.
This lithograph by James Tissot (1836-1902), titled 'Caricature of Alexander Baillie Cochrane M.P.,' was published in *Vanity Fair* magazine on December 2, 1871. Tissot, a French painter and caricaturist, is well known for his society portraits and genre scenes of fashionable life in both Paris and London. He produced a series of caricatures for *Vanity Fair* between 1869 and 1877, capturing prominent figures of the day. Alexander Baillie Cochrane, later Baron Lamington, was a Conservative politician and man of letters. The caricature depicts him seated in a chair, legs crossed, with a top hat placed on the floor beside him. Tissot exaggerates Cochrane's features, giving him a somewhat pompous and self-satisfied expression. The lithograph is rendered in muted tones, with a focus on line and form to convey the subject's personality. The print is accompanied by the caption 'Judicious Amelioration'.
