A precise architectural engraving documenting the interior wall elevation of the Cabinet de Sully in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, Paris.
This architectural engraving depicts the interior wall elevation of the Cabinet de Sully, located within the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. Produced by the firm Noblet et Baudry, the print forms part of a larger survey titled L'Art Architectural en France, which documented significant historical interiors during the nineteenth century. The composition presents a precise, measured view of the Louis XIII style panelling, fireplace, and decorative relief work.
The drawing employs a rigorous, linear technique typical of mid-nineteenth-century architectural documentation. It captures the symmetry of the room, featuring classical pilasters, carved friezes, and figurative panels. The fireplace serves as the central element, flanked by vertical panels adorned with urns and scrolling foliage. Above the dado rail, a series of relief carvings depicts allegorical figures, rendered with careful attention to proportion and shadow. The inclusion of a scale bar at the bottom confirms the technical purpose of the print, intended for architects and historians to study the proportions of French seventeenth-century design.
Noblet et Baudry were active in Paris during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, contributing to the growing interest in the preservation and study of French heritage. Their work provides a clear record of the room's configuration before later modifications. The engraving style is clean and restrained, prioritising clarity of form over atmospheric effects. By stripping away colour and texture, the artists allow the viewer to focus entirely on the geometry and ornamental programme of the interior. This print is a valuable resource for those interested in the history of French interior design and the methodology of nineteenth-century architectural recording.
