Description
A portrait of a boy holding a white cat, rendered in the distinctive reverse-glass painting style of Croatian artist Ivan Generalić.
Ivan Generalić is a central figure of the Hlebine School, a movement of Croatian peasant painters who gained international recognition during the mid-twentieth century. This work displays the characteristic techniques of the Hlebine artists, specifically the practice of painting in reverse on the back of glass sheets. This method requires the artist to apply fine details first, building the image in layers that are viewed through the transparent surface. The composition features a young boy holding a white cat against a dark, nocturnal backdrop. The figure is rendered with the simplified, rounded forms typical of Generalić’s approach, which prioritises emotional clarity over anatomical precision. The boy’s expression is fixed and direct, creating a sense of stillness that contrasts with the soft, rounded features of the animal. The background, illuminated by a small, pale moon, provides a muted environment that pushes the subject to the foreground. Generalić often drew inspiration from the rural life of his native Podravina region. His work frequently blends observed reality with a dreamlike atmosphere. The use of glass as a medium imparts a unique luminosity to the colours, as the light reflects off the smooth surface. The texture of the paint is obscured by the glass, resulting in a polished finish that enhances the clarity of the forms. This piece captures the quiet, observational quality that defined the artist’s career, focusing on the relationship between the human subject and the natural world. The lack of complex perspective and the deliberate stylisation of the features are hallmarks of the Naïve tradition, where the artist’s personal vision takes precedence over academic rules of representation.
