A study of a Dutch bleaching ground, rendered in watercolour and gouache, capturing the quiet labour of the working class in 1882.
Painted during his time in The Hague, this work captures a scene of daily labour near the city outskirts. Van Gogh focuses on the expansive, flat terrain where linens are laid out to bleach in the sun. The composition is dominated by the horizontal stretch of the field, which draws the eye across the paper towards the distant buildings and the church spire on the horizon. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones of brown, ochre, and muted grey to convey the damp, overcast atmosphere of the Dutch climate. Van Gogh uses thin, fluid washes of watercolour combined with opaque gouache to define the figures of the workers and the scattered white cloths. These white patches provide a rhythmic contrast against the darker, textured ground of the field. This piece reflects the artist's early interest in the lives of the working class and his technical experimentation with mixed media on paper. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the dampness of the earth and the heavy, cloud-filled sky. By placing the viewer at a slight elevation, he provides a clear view of the bleaching process, a common sight in the region at the time. The work avoids romanticisation, presenting a direct observation of a mundane, industrialised task. The structural elements, such as the fence in the foreground and the architectural silhouettes in the background, provide a sense of scale and distance. This study demonstrates his developing ability to organise complex spatial relationships within a relatively small format, using light and shadow to guide the viewer through the scene.
