A delicate Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, featuring a playful parody of the classical Chinese figures Kyoyu and Sobu.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga belongs to the early period of Ukiyo-e, a genre that captured the fleeting pleasures of Edo-period Japan. Shigenaga was a teacher to several later masters, including Harunobu, and his work demonstrates the transition from monochrome ink prints to the early stages of hand-coloured compositions. The image functions as a mitate-e, or parody, which was a popular cultural practice of reinterpreting classical Chinese legends through the lens of contemporary Edo life.
The scene depicts a young man mounted on an ox, accompanied by a woman. This composition references the legendary Chinese figures Kyoyu and Sobu, who were often associated with themes of reclusion and nature. By placing these figures in the attire and setting of the eighteenth century, Shigenaga invites the viewer to engage with a playful subversion of historical narratives. The artist employs a delicate, calligraphic line quality, characteristic of the period, which defines the figures and the animal with economy and grace.
The print features subtle hand-applied colour, which provides a gentle warmth to the composition. The ox is rendered with textured ink washes, while the figures are depicted with fluid, rhythmic lines that suggest movement and poise. The background remains sparse, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the interaction between the two subjects. This work is an example of the sophisticated visual language developed by early Ukiyo-e artists, who balanced traditional iconography with the aesthetic preferences of the urban merchant class. The paper shows the natural ageing expected of a print from this era, adding to its historical character. It provides a window into the intellectual and artistic climate of the time, where classical references were constantly reshaped to suit the tastes of a modern audience.
