A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen featuring a woman with a shamisen, rendered in a traditional style with delicate line work.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts a bijin, or beautiful woman, holding a shamisen, a traditional three-stringed Japanese musical instrument. Eisen was a prolific designer of ukiyo-e prints during the late Edo period, known for his distinct style that often featured elongated figures and a focus on the fashionable women of the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
The composition is typical of the genre, balancing the central figure against a small inset cartouche in the upper left corner. This cartouche provides a secondary scene, likely a reference to a specific location or a narrative element from the series to which this print belongs. The woman wears a kimono decorated with butterfly motifs, while the lower portion of her garment features a dense, repeating floral pattern. Her posture is relaxed, yet the inclusion of the shamisen suggests a moment of musical performance or preparation.
Eisen utilised a limited colour palette, relying on soft pinks, muted yellows, and deep blacks to define the forms. The lines are precise, characteristic of the woodblock carving techniques of the time. The print includes calligraphic text, which serves as both a signature and a descriptive element, providing context for the subject matter. This work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the nineteenth-century urban population in Japan, where prints of this nature were widely collected and appreciated for their depiction of contemporary fashion and cultural pastimes. The flat perspective and emphasis on decorative pattern are hallmarks of the ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritised graphic clarity over three-dimensional realism.
