A detailed triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicting the historic naval Battle of Dan-no-ura with panoramic perspective.
This triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Sadahide depicts the Battle of Dan-no-ura, a naval engagement that occurred in 1185. The work captures the expansive scale of the conflict, showing numerous vessels navigating the straits between the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. Sadahide, a student of Utagawa Kunisada, was known for his detailed cartographic and historical prints during the late Edo period.
The composition employs a high-angle perspective, allowing the viewer to survey the entire theatre of war. The artist uses cartouches and text labels to identify specific locations and military units, a common feature in Japanese historical prints of this era. The ships are rendered with attention to their structural details, including sails, banners, and deck arrangements. The sea is depicted with stylised waves, while the surrounding hills and coastal geography provide a sense of place.
Sadahide uses a balanced palette of blues, greens, and earthy tones, punctuated by the red of the banners and labels. The print reflects the interest in historical narratives that remained popular in Japanese woodblock printing throughout the nineteenth century. The work is divided into three panels, each contributing to the overall panoramic view of the maritime battle. This print serves as a record of the artistic conventions used to document historical events in the mid-nineteenth century, combining topographical accuracy with the dramatic flair characteristic of the Utagawa school.
