A delicate Japanese surimono woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, featuring an abalone shell and various smaller shells accompanied by traditional kyoka poetry.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned, limited-edition print often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. These works were typically produced with high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as embossing and metallic pigments, to reflect the refined tastes of their patrons.
The composition features a large awabi, or abalone shell, rendered with subtle colour gradients and fine line work. Surrounding the primary subject are smaller, varied shells, arranged with a sense of quiet observation. The upper portion of the print is occupied by calligraphic text, which consists of kyoka, a style of humorous or witty thirty-one-syllable poetry. The integration of text and image is a hallmark of the surimono tradition, where the visual elements often serve as a thematic accompaniment to the verses.
Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture natural forms with clarity. His work in this medium demonstrates a mastery of the woodblock process, particularly in the delicate application of colour to suggest the texture of the shell surfaces. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the balance between the natural subject and the literary content. This piece provides a glimpse into the cultural activities of the period, where art and literature were closely linked through the medium of the printed page. The muted palette and clean composition reflect the aesthetic preferences of the literati who commissioned such works for private circulation.
