A close-up study of autumn foliage by Georgia O'Keeffe, capturing the seasonal colours and organic forms of Lake George in 1924.
Georgia O'Keeffe produced this work during her time at Lake George, New York, a location that provided her with a consistent source of natural subjects throughout the 1920s. The painting focuses on the seasonal transformation of foliage, presenting a close-up view that removes the leaves from their original context. By isolating these organic forms, O'Keeffe directs the viewer to observe the specific curves, veins, and colour transitions of the individual specimens.
The composition relies on a tight, overlapping arrangement of leaves. The palette is dominated by deep reds, burnt oranges, and muted greens, which capture the specific light and atmosphere of an American autumn. O'Keeffe uses smooth, controlled brushwork to define the edges of each leaf, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. The background is obscured by a dark, shadow-like mass, which pushes the illuminated leaves forward and creates a sense of depth despite the lack of a traditional horizon line.
This piece demonstrates the artist's interest in abstraction through the magnification of natural objects. Rather than documenting the entire tree or the surrounding environment, she chooses to examine the structural beauty of the leaf itself. The work is characteristic of her mid-1920s output, where she began to refine her approach to scale and form. The result is a study of colour and shape that remains grounded in the observation of the physical world, yet leans into a more formal, graphic interpretation of nature. The interplay between the sharp, defined edges of the foreground leaves and the darker, more ambiguous shapes behind them creates a rhythmic visual experience.
