A geometric screenprint by Sol LeWitt featuring concentric, multi-coloured arcs arranged in a systematic, minimalist composition.
Sol LeWitt, a figure associated with the development of Conceptual Art and Minimalism, often prioritised the idea behind a work over its physical execution. In this screenprint, LeWitt employs a rigid, systematic approach to colour and form. The composition consists of concentric arcs, radiating from a central point at the base of the frame. These bands are rendered in a sequence of saturated hues, moving from a warm yellow core through red, blue, orange, green, and purple, before reaching a dark, grounding tone at the outer edge.
The work rejects traditional painterly gestures in favour of clean, hard-edged geometry. By utilising a structured, mathematical arrangement, LeWitt removes the subjective hand of the artist from the final output. The arcs are contained within a stark black border, which creates a sharp contrast against the white paper margin. This framing device reinforces the flatness of the image, drawing attention to the interaction of the colours rather than any illusion of depth or perspective.
LeWitt's practice frequently involved the use of instructions or sets of rules to generate visual outcomes. This print reflects his interest in seriality and the reduction of art to its primary components. The repetition of the arc shape, combined with a deliberate colour palette, produces a rhythmic visual experience. It is a study in order and clarity, demonstrating how simple geometric parameters can result in a complex visual field. The work is representative of his later career, where he expanded his exploration of colour and form through various printmaking techniques. It remains a clear example of his analytical approach to art-making, where the logic of the system dictates the final appearance of the piece.
