A 1917 still life by Henri Matisse, featuring a delicate bouquet of anemones placed before an oval mirror in a quiet interior.
Henri Matisse painted Anemones and Mirror in 1917, a period during which he began his long residency in Nice. The composition features a glass vase containing a cluster of anemones, positioned before an ornate, oval-framed mirror. The mirror reflects the dark interior space, creating a sense of depth that contrasts with the flattened, decorative treatment of the surrounding surfaces.
Matisse employs a palette of muted blues, soft pinks, and ochre tones. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the essential forms of the flowers and the reflective surface of the glass without resorting to excessive detail. The mirror frame acts as a structural element, anchoring the composition while the flowers provide a rhythmic, organic counterpoint to the rigid geometry of the furniture and the frame itself.
This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between interior space and the objects within it. By placing the flowers in front of the mirror, Matisse creates a dual perspective: the viewer sees the bouquet directly and simultaneously observes its position within the room through the reflection. The painting avoids traditional perspective, favouring a balance of colour and shape that defines the spatial arrangement. The light, captured in the blue tones of the vase and the soft shadows on the table, suggests a quiet, domestic setting. Matisse focuses on the interplay of light and shadow, using the dark void of the mirror to push the floral arrangement forward. The result is a study of form and colour that remains characteristic of his approach to still life painting during the early twentieth century.
