A dramatic history painting by Henryk Siemiradzki depicting the moment Alexander the Great places his life in the hands of his physician, Philip.
Henryk Siemiradzki, a prominent figure in the late nineteenth-century Academic tradition, captures a moment of high tension from the life of Alexander the Great. The narrative depicts the Macedonian king, suffering from a severe illness, as he receives a medicinal draught from his physician, Philip of Acarnania. The scene is drawn from the accounts of Arrian and Quintus Curtius Rufus, which describe how Alexander received a letter accusing Philip of intending to poison him. In a display of absolute trust, Alexander drinks the medicine while handing the letter to his doctor to read.
Siemiradzki constructs the composition with the precision characteristic of his training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. The interior is rendered with archaeological attention to detail, from the classical furniture and armour to the patterned textiles and the ornate lamp stand. The lighting is theatrical, focusing on the interaction between the two central figures. The physician, standing to the left, holds the letter with a look of calm concern, while the reclining Alexander, draped in a deep green cloth, prepares to consume the potion. The surrounding figures, including a young attendant and soldiers in the background, provide a sense of scale and historical atmosphere. The artist employs a controlled palette, using warm skin tones and muted shadows to create a sense of intimacy within the grand, staged environment. This work reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity, presenting a moralising narrative through a polished, realistic lens. The textures of the tiger skin rug, the metallic sheen of the helmet, and the soft folds of the drapery demonstrate the technical proficiency that defined Siemiradzki's career in both Poland and Russia.
