A serene literati ink painting by Tanomura Chokunyū, featuring a mountain retreat and poetic calligraphy in the traditional Bunjinga style.
This work originates from the Kikanchō, or Album of Marvelous Landscapes, by the Japanese artist Tanomura Chokunyū. As a prominent figure in the Bunjinga tradition, Chokunyū maintained the ideals of the literati painters who sought to capture the essence of nature through brushwork rather than strict realism. The composition reflects the classic Nanga aesthetic, where negative space plays a role equal to the painted elements.
The scene depicts a quiet retreat situated near a mountain stream. The artist employs a restrained palette, using ink washes to define the mass of the mountains while applying light colour to suggest the foliage and terrain. The brushwork is deliberate, showing the influence of traditional Chinese ink painting techniques that Chokunyū studied throughout his career. A small structure sits at the base of the slope, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, quiet environment.
In the upper right corner, the artist has included a poetic inscription accompanied by red seals. These elements are integral to the Bunjinga form, where the integration of calligraphy, poetry, and painting creates a unified expression of the artist's internal state. The paper texture remains visible, adding a tactile quality to the print. This piece offers a view into the late nineteenth-century Japanese interpretation of classical themes, focusing on the balance between the physical world and the meditative practice of the artist. The work is an example of the technical control and philosophical depth associated with the Bunjinga school during the Meiji period.
