This woodblock print is part of the Hoeido Tokaido series, a collection documenting the fifty-three stations along the route connecting Edo and Kyoto. Utagawa Hiroshige captures a domestic scene at an inn in Akasaka, focusing on the daily activities of the staff and travellers. The composition is divided by the architecture of the inn, with sliding doors and open verandas creating distinct zones for the figures.

In the left section, a traveller stands on the wooden veranda, while inside, waitresses attend to guests. The right side shows another group of women engaged in conversation and preparation. A prominent cycad plant occupies the foreground, acting as a visual anchor that connects the interior space to the exterior environment. Hiroshige employs a balanced colour palette, using soft blues, yellows, and earthy tones to define the textures of the tatami mats, wooden structures, and patterned kimonos.
